State of emergency declared, Kingston Jamaica
Bruce Golding, Jamaica’s Prime minister has declared a state of emergency in parts of Kingston Jamaica as armed gangs defend the extradition of alleged trafficker Dundus.
Dundus is considered in some parts as a modern day Robin-Hood providing resource in areas where the government can’t reach. The implications of his extradition will further add to Jamaica’s woes and could cause a power vacuum.
Speaking from Jamaica, our reporters eye witness account from May Pen adds to the severity of the situation and our feelings go out to everybody caught up in the violence. FLYER will provide further updates as they occur.”
“You know how they have show-downs at noon in those cowboy films where the whole town closes down in anticipation of a shoot out? Well that is exactly how it went down today.
Around 4pm rumors emerged that Bruce Golding had signed release papers for Kingston strong man Dundus to be released to the US authorities. There were also rumors that a national state of emergency had been declared. Upon hearing that news the most of Kingston closed down. I’m talking businesses like Western Union.
Fear started to spread throughout other towns like where I was, May Pen. I was standing in a Western Union line when the guy in front of me got the phone call that Kingston was on Lock-down.
Literally anything could go down tonight. We hope for the best but are cautious that there could be wild shoot outs and raids…… Hopefully nothing will happen. Bruce should be addressing the nation on TV today.”
At the time of posting there are currently two police stations under attack from armed gangs and one police station in the West of the capital on fire. Many of Jamaica’s enclaves beleive that Dundus provides a sense of security which has been neglected by the ruling party. Rival gangs are beleived to be united over their opposition to the governments extradition stance and they’ve vowed to fight to protect him from the authorities.
Golding’s officials have told women and children to evacuate the town as they believe; “Matters will get much worse before they get better.”
