It’s not unusual for celebrities to be booed at film premiers. Celebrities who don’t somehow conform to the every whim of the crowd or the press are often given a tough time however it’s very rarely reported. The media agenda to pour shame on the American was likely to have been spun long before the star even stepped foot on the red carpet for the premier of W.E.

One reporter said: “It was likely that Madonna’s cards were marked many months ago with regards the British media. She was photographed arriving on set of this film by bicycle, there were unfair comments circulating about her commitment to the project which coincided with her ongoing private life which became public  knowledge.”

Madonna also purchased a new property which she converted into a gym. This meant that photographers were unable to snap the star going from home to the gym, it didn’t go down well in the media whatsoever.”

To make matters worse a sequence of events on the night of the movie premier of W.E. meant that Madonna had little chance of ever receiving any positive press from the night.

1.) To begin with the lead car which she was travelling was shunted from behind by a black Range rover as it arrived on the red-carpet.

2.) Whilst walking the red carpet scuffles broke out twice amongst autograph collectors forcing Madonna to abandon her pans of greeting the public.

3). The lack of security meant that Madonna was stranded between the public and the press who surrounded the Madonna on the red carpet creating a media frenzy.

4.) Madonna was whisked before the press photographers many of whom did not get a single frame which annoyed their agencies.

5.) When Madonna left the cinema she greeted her fans and the public and threw a bouquet of flowers into the crowd. Madonna stayed on the carpet for two minutes however none of this was reported.

     About the film W.E.

W.E. is a rich, elegantly structured exploration of the connection between two women, decades apart, both confronting the consequences of desire. Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) gave up a promising Manhattan career to marry successful psychoanalyst William (Richard Coyle), but finds herself trapped in loveless marriage.

She’s obsessed with Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the intelligent and stylish divorcée who captured the heart of King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy).

After Edward abdicated the throne he and Wallis married, but as Duke and Duchess of Windsor they spent the rest of their lives effectively exiled from the UK. Frustrated by her husband’s indifference and inspired by Wallis’ pursuit of love in the face of social disapproval, when Wally meets an intriguing new man (Oscar Isaac), she finds herself drawn to him.

Madonna, who directs and co-wrote the screenplay (with Alek Keshishian), strikes a delicate balance between the romantic aspirations of the women and their strength and resilience. Working with a world-class team of collaborators, Madonna also gives us a film that is visually sensuous, without ever lapsing into period drama clichés. Andrea Riseborough and Abbie Cornish confirm their status as two of cinemas’ most talented and exciting young actors, and Oscar Isaac brings a magnetic presence. A work of maturity but far from stuffy, W.E. sees Madonna starting a welcome new chapter in her filmmaking career.

     Celebs who rocked the  premier

Fresh from working in America, Brit model/DJ  Toloula Adeyemi looked cool in printed grey.

Toloula shared the limelight with Andrea Riseborough who plays the US divorcee and actress Katie McGrath.

Singing sensation MIA also made an impression at the star-studded premier.

The glamorous Indian actress sparkled in a black Ralph Lauren trouser suit as she walked the red carpet in London’s Leicester Square. Arriving fashionably late there were huge sighs of relief amongst the PR when she finally arrived. Freida stayed to watch the film and attended press interviews.

Set in present day India, Trishna, Freida Pinto is the daughter of an auto rickshaw driver. She meets Jay (Riz Ahmed), the son of a wealthy property developer, who has come to work for his father in a beautiful heritage hotel n Rajasthan. When Trishna’s own father has an accident and is unable to work, Jay offers her a job in the hotel so she can support her family. The two fall in love.

Trishna whose rural upbringing n Rajasthan finds life tough going in modern Mumbai, trying hard to blend in with Jay’s profiled friends who etch out their living in the film and entertainment industry, Trishna finds life increasingly challenging with unpredictable consequences.

The film is an intriguing insight into modern India which is likely to challenge your preconceptions. Trishna is a bitter sweet fable which is beautifully filmed amongst some stunning locations.

Earlier in the day, Freida was spotted in walking through Leicester Square.

Freeda Pinto who sprung to fame as Laticka in Slumdog Millionaire, looked positively glam as she soaked up the midday sun in the London’s Leicester Square.

According to recent reports, African and Caribbean women residing in the UK spend over £30 million per year on hair and beauty products. This industry embraces change and at the fore front of this constant evolution is the Afro Hair and Beauty Live showcase.

Each year thousands of visitors from Europe and overseas descend on Europe’s largest Afro Hair show to either exhibit or marvel at the breathtaking innovation and creativity on display.

This year was without exception the most diverse. “There is simply something for everyone and every taste.” said Mark from Flyer.

Emmerging talent Korell Williams (Zig Zag stylist) is ranked amongst the best and we believe he is ‘tipped for the top’. 

As with America there is an upward trend towards natural hair, however the industry remains heavily influenced by global trend setters such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Niki Minaj and the like.

Building on her success of previous years was a young hair stylist: Christine Walker originally from Kingston, Jamaica.

Christine who resides at  Follicles Hair Salon and was awarded first place in Sensationnel Braid Icon of The Year category.

Shortly after heading off the stage Christine Walker was called back again to collect the Sensationnel Weave Icon of The Year award.

Christine Walker said: “This award means so much to me I based my Braid Icon designs on military and precision. Achieving first place is a fantastic confidence boost. I’m now officially ranked amongst the best.”

Marcia Johnson from Rougz Hair and Beauty was awarded first place in the Sensationnel Icon Avant Garde category.

Speaking to Flyer Marcia said: I came here this weekend to win two awards; I have achieved all that I have set out to achieve.

As well as hair shows and seminars, Zed Eye fashion label provided an opportunity for emerging and established designers  to showcase their collections.

Despite the recession creativity was on the agenda.

Atomic Kitten’s Liz Mclarnon was spotted at the Sleek stand. She was given a little extra boost from the Sleek staff.

Other exhibitors included the fantastic Root 2 Tip hair brand.

The Afro Hair & Beauty Live show remains a great place to network, exhibit and showcase new products.

First time parents, Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are reported to have been enjoying the recent arrival of their baby born to a surrogate mother in California.  It would appear however judging by our recent photos that even Sir Elton John may also be susceptible to sleepless nights experienced by most parents of newly born infants.

Elton John was snapped leaving the Louis Vuitton flagship store in New Bond Street, London last night, the darling of British Pop, Sir Elton John was looking like he’d been deprived of sleep for several days.

Bridget O’Connell, from Mind said in a recent BBC interview: “New parents can be faced with sleep deprivation, changes in lifestyle, changes in their relationship and new responsibilities all at once, and we don’t always remember that this is going to be an issue for men as well as for women.”

Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish who become parents to a son born on Christmas Day were pictured last night at the Aids Foundation charity fundraiser to which Elton was hosting.

Guests included, Princess Beatrice, Tamara and Petra Ecclestone, Liz Hurley (pictured with fashion designer Patrick Cox),

Holly Valance and Nick Candy (Above).

After fifteen years, The Afro Hair and Beauty show has reportedly terminated its contract with Alexandra Palace music and entertainment venue and will be relocating to the Business, Design Centre, Islington from May 2010.

From its humble beginnings in Kensington town Hall, the shows popularity resulted in rapid expansion. Alexandra Palace was for many years seen as the ideal location to host the show but due to a combination of factors the shows organisers faced a difficult decision.

The shows organiser, Grace Kelly reported in the Haringey Independent:  “It’s sad to leave Alexandra Palace, but the show is all about fashion and staying fresh, and the time came for us to move on.

“It was once a great venue, but the building is falling into disrepair and it doesn’t look as good as it once did.

“A few years ago, there were plans to revamp the Palace with bars and restaurants, and we were eager to be a part of it, but it never materialised.”

In 2009 the show was hit severely by engineering works resulting in the closure of Wood Green train station, this serves Alexandra Palace. It was reported by FLYER at the time: “show’s such as this should be compensated by rail networks that continue to disrupt and wreck travel plans across the capital.”

The Afro Hair and Beauty show is on at the Islington Business Design Centre on May 30 and 31 2010.

Now in its thirteenth year, the Mahogany Bridal Fashion and Beauty Show stands-alone in being the premier event to showcase products and services geared towards people of colour.

CEO of Mahogany Models, Sola Oyebade commented after the show: “The ‘Wedding and Tourism Industry’ has suffered under the economic down-turn and we certainly have had to weather the storm. The fact that we are now in our thirteenth year is proof that there is a big demand for shows such as this.

This years show was bigger and better than before, despite the down-turn marriages are still taking place in vast numbers. 

We have received some really positive feedback from exhibitors and the public alike. The range of clothing exhibited were far more diverse than in previous years. Our themes included; African traditional, English/African, the bridesmaids and custom-made, this reflected the demography of our visitors.

FLYER Tipped for the Top

Matthew from FLYER said: “The range of designs showcased to day was spot-on. There was a touching moment when Tarell McIntosh, 15, student winner of Fashion Diversity received a standing ovation for his unique and personal collection introduced as ‘A Dress for the Cultural Bride’.

By aged eleven Tarell had already been commissioned to embroider, crochet and knit for other designers, Tarell made his London Fashion Week Debut last year at aged only fifteen.

Tarell said; “Today was about the Mahogany bride, I’m not here to showcase western-fashion, the whole point is to accentuate the Mahogany Bride in its full entirety. It’s also my intention to bring African design and ideology to the forefront of my collection. My collection today was drawn from several previous collections which included African – patchwork and ready to wear.”

 Below is a snippet of some of the collections showcased.

Diva Luscious ready-to-wear collection combined African-fabrics with a modern twist. The models glided down the runway with effortless ease.

Latibeau combined beautifully crafted silk dresses which oozed quality. The simplicity of her designs was reminiscent of classic Greek goddesses which stood out from the crowd.

B-Divine: Traditional bridal wear with a modern twist. B-Divine’s collection was about pure elegance.  The collection was amongst the most diverse showcased and an ideal choice if you’re looking for a theme to your wedding.

Tarell McIntosh.  It’s very hard and probably unjust to categorize this young talent. His ready-to-wear collection had movement, elegance class and sophistication. His combination of patch-work using African fabric inspired by Vivienne Westwood was simply breadth-taking.

Samantha  Roach; Classic designs combined with exquisite finishing are the hallmark of this collection.

 Samantha Roach’s vision is plain to see; this statement collection is very transferable and combined with a simple personal touch-such as jewellery makes this collection very unique.  

Make-up was for the fashion show was supplied by Bella Queen. “We went for the Gothic & Glitter look because this was neutral and transferable for all collections.

What better way to kick start the new year than a trip down to Selfridge’s concept store in central London and visit their nineties inspired retail experience.

The concept store will present an edit of original nineties and nineties inspired products across fashion, accessories, lifestyle, beauty, design, music, media and film.

The nineties project an eclectic mash-up of influences, where the nihilism of Generation X met the hedonism of the 24 hour party people.

Celebrities who attended this exclusive launch included Radio One Xtra DJ: Sarah Jane Parker, Pixie Geldof, Designer – Henry Holland and the fabulous Noisette front women Shingai Shoniwa who said: “I have decided to give my hair a rest. It feels like my hair has become an extra member of the band. I’m tired of going to bed with pins in my hair.”
