Sally Dowler described in court the moment they were given false hopes after finding out their daughter Milly’s voice-mails had been erased.

Previously they were unable to leave messages due to the fact that the missing school-girl’s voicemail was full. Sally Dowler said: “At first we were unable to leave messages because her voicemail facility was full, I was used to hearing that.

“I rang her phone and it clicked through to her voicemail and I just jumped and said: ‘She’s alive…'”

“I told my friends ‘she’s picked up her voicemail’. All can remember is that the police told us that they’d put some credit on her phone and I can only remember them telling us that.”

Following the revelations Sally Dowler described the sequence of events as: “Terribly difficult to process.”

False hopes lead to despair when it was alleged private detective Glenn Mulcaire who was reportedly employed by the News of The World had secretly hacked into the telephone of the missing school girl. Glenn Mulcaire however denies allegations that he deleted voice-mail messages.

Actor Hugh Grant also gave evidence  at the Leveson Inquiry today
